The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America
Vol. 1 & 2
by J. David Conrad
Each locomotive is listed individually by city and state with known technical details such as builder's number, date built, wheel arrangement, cylinder size, boiler pressure, driving wheel diameter, tractive effort, loaded weight, fuel used, track gauge, current status and location. In addition, the ownership history is shown including the original owner, subsequent owners with dates of sale, road numbers, renumberings, and locations operated at (on short line and industrial engines). A substantial number of locomotives are illustrated in photographs, most of generous size showing the locomotives in operation. Three substantial indices permit locating locomotives by builder, wheel arrangement and major past owners.
Due to the substantial size of the material, the Directory has been printed as two perfect bound volumes for ease of handling and reference. Volume One (pages 1 through 192) covers the United States east of teh Mississippi River, all of Canada, and contains introductory sections including the Preface, Acknowledgements, How to Use This Book and an introduction to the Whyte system of steam locomotive wheel arrangements. Volume Two (pages 193 through 368) covers the United states west of the Mississippi River, all of Mexico and contains the indices as well as sections on unknown and recently scrapped locomotives. It is recommended that both volumes be purchased and used as a set.
We regret that this title is no longer in print.
