founded in 1979, Bus Bash is intended to be the bus industry equivalent
of a "railroad day" or "aviation day." In addition to being an informal
gathering of bus owners, Bus Bash gives the public a chance to see and
inspect antique buses, converted coaches, modern tour and charter coaches
as well as brand new manufacturer "demo" coaches.
Activities normally start on a Friday evening with an informal reception and cash bar. There are usually two tours on Saturday. One covers local bus tour attractions while the other visits bus garages in the area. Saturday evening is dedicated to a reception and dinner. This is usually informal and often provides local cuisine or is held at a local attraction. On Sunday, the buses gather in one location and the public is invited to view and inspect them. People are encouraged to vote for their favorites. A plaque is awarded to the manufacturer "demo" coach getting the most votes. First and second place trophies go to the best modern, antique, and converted coaches. There is also a trophy awarded to the display bus coming the greatest distance. Bus Bash ends with a short bus parade around the local area. Bob Redden will often provide a bus slide or video presentation on Sunday evening after Bus Bash is over. There are normally two Bus Bash events annually. They are held on or around the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. One event is usually located near the east coast of the United States while the other event is located in the Midwest or western states. Bus Bash events are awarded and licensed to a local host company. National publicity, planning assistance and direction, and the trophies and staff for the awards program are provided. The host company is responsible for arrangements with the hotel, planning the Friday evening reception, the Saturday tours, the Saturday dinner, the Sunday displays and Sunday parade. A local convention and visitors bureau will often help with the Saturday tour. Industry suppliers will frequently assist with some of the transportation or a Saturday luncheon. The host company gets to keep all registration fees to pay expenses. The major obligation of the host company is to provide the staff time to do the local planning for the Bus Bash event. In some cases, the host company also provides buses for transportation for the Saturday trips and any shuttles. The major advantages of being a host company include substantial industry publicity and a public bus event in your home town which will enhance your image and increase your charter and tour sales. Bus Bash host companies most often are intercity charter and tour bus operators. However, bus dealers and bus conversion companies have also been awarded Bus Bash events as well as other businesses.
